LIVING WITH GAUDI

In my opinion this is a very interesting documentary, both for us citizens of Barcelona as for outsiders because it explains (or rather analizes) one of the icons in our city, the so-called  "Casa Milá", a building by Gaudi known nowadays all over the world as "La Pedrera", located in Paseo de Gracia, 92.

This analysis or exploration of the said building is carried out through a triple perspective: a) the view given to us by the last tenant living in a flat of "La Pedrera" building, Mrs. Carmen Burgos-Bosch,  widow of the late Notary, Mr. Lluís Roca-Sastre who went to live in that building at the end of the fifties with his family; b) the process of raising "La Pedrera" building, with old footage and interviews with the descendants of the Milá family (original owners of the building) and with neighbours who had lived in that building; and c) with an approach towards the figure of  Gaudi and his work. Surprisingly enough, the result of this so-called cocktail is not a disjointed, fragmented documentary but a whole where the story unfolds at different levels without losing its sense of direction.

Besides, to help the audience's understanding -and in what one  imagines is a wink towards  "Generation Z" -, the plot introduces the figure of a young girl who, looking like a tourist, will visit "La Pedrera" and, through her eyes (quite literally), we`ll find out the spell that  "La Pedrera" casts on her.

The bits of this documentary regarding the last tenant - that one had the privilege of meeting her when I began as a lawyer- convey the impression of what it was like to live in a flat of such an odd building as "La Pedrera".  Here the documentary follows this lady at the end of her life, when she was forced to leave "La Pedrera" due to illness. Still, unlike the movie  "Amour", 2012, by Michael Haneke with  Jean-Louis Trintignant and  Emmanuelle Riva, in her eighties, at the end of the road, this is not a harsh and sour documentary of the process of aging, but of her personal memories and experiences of living at "La Pedrera". Here thankfully the documentary doesn't resort to family secrets or hidden revelations so much in line with  current social media sensationalism.  The only revelation we are told is that this lady, like Gaudi himself, was a strong Catholic believer.

The bits about the raising of the building have some interesting interviews with people who had lived  in the attics -at the top of this building-, in the sixties of the last century, in a bohemian atmosphere which nowadays in our times of political correctness and with our present town council, seems quite difficult if not outright impossible (keep in mind that then we were living under Franco's dictatorship here in Spain).  All in all, one here believes just  the story of the  problems encountered when raising that building would have been enough to make a documentary of its own. My conclusion, seen all the "havoc" committed by the different owners in most of the flats of "La Pedrera" (that is, "demolishing" -there's no other way to put it-  all the original work by Gaudi), it's almost a miracle that the flat of our lady tenant did survive in its original shape and that it can be shown to us in this documentary.

Regarding Gaudi's figure, after seeing this documentary, one here thinks we can understand his sources of inspiration and why he could never draw a straight line... This documentary shows us his evolution till the end of his days,  explaining the value of  "La Pedrera" in his whole work.

In my opinion, this documentary is a must, if you want to find out about an icon from Barcelona, no matter what you

may think of Gaudí.

In Barcelona, October, 3rd, 2026.
