EL ÚLTIMO VIRREY DE LA INDIA -VICEROY’S HOUSE

(EN CASTELLANO DEBAJO)  I read in the credits at the end of the movie that it was partially inspired by the book by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins, "Freedom at Midnight" (1975). The film is an historical portrait on how the independence of India was negotiated and, with it, the partition of the Crown's Jewel in two countries: Pakistan and India, as we know it nowadays ( we shall leave aside Nepal and other independent countries in the Himalayas and, within Pakistan, we shall include East Pakistan, nowadays Bangladesh).      One of the merits of the movie is that it was directed by a Hindi lady,  Ms. Gurinder Chadha, but, unlike "Gandhi" (1982), it shows a rather neutral point of view when describing the different characters ( whether British, Hindus or Pakistani) that populate the screen. In fact, the basics of the story could have even led to a Fellini-like film, the kind where an "incredible" plot leads to absurd situations. In the movie -based on real facts, as you can check from the links above-, an Italian engineer conceived the idea of "building" an "artificial island" off the coast from Rimini beyond Italian jurisdiction ( in that time "national" jurisdiction was six miles across the sea and beyond that distance it was international waters). Well, this engineer, togeth
