"OPPENHEIMER" (NOLAN - 2023)

Cuando una película como la que nos ocupa, de tres horas de duración, con un  tema tan ambicioso como la vida del científico Bob Oppenheimer, que devino el padre de la bomba de atómica ( sí, sí, las que los americanos lanzaron sobre Nagasaki e Hiroshima), opta por recurrir, desde el comienzo, a escenas fragmentadas de un juicio al que se sometió al científico al final de su carrera ( bueno, a una investigación por una  comisión interdepartamental y luego, del Senado, pero para el profano, a un juicio),  todo ello revela, para quién suscribe, una falta de confianza por parte del director, el ahora aclamadísimo Christopher Nolan, del material que se trae entre manos.  

En mi opinión, lo que importa de "Oppenheimer" (2023) es el proceso de creación de la bomba. Los debates morales, psicológicos y las relaciones sentimentales del protagonista, bueno, importan mientras no hagan perder el rumbo de la película. 

En la película se nos explica muy brevemente como Oppenheimer había flirteado con el comunismo y de su relación con una primera novia - interpretada por Florence Pugh- que permaneció fiel al partido (tampoco tiene mucha relevancia esta relación salvo que parece que lo inició sexualmente. Pero, insistimos, la peli anda por otros derroteros). La parte de que va a estudiar a Alemania antes del nazismo y conoce a un futuro científico alemán podría haber dado lugar a una rivalidad entre ambos. Pero la "peli" tampoco explota esta vía. En este viaje conoce a un científico danés, interpretado por Kenneth Branagh, que uno se imagina debía estar detrás de la idea del "agua pesada" que los nazis desarrollaron en Noruega para obtener la bomba atómica. 

En cuanto a su relación con su esposa, interpretada por Emily Blunt, la película es plana como un listín telefónico. Nos enteramos que ella tiene problemas con la bebida, que no es feliz cuidando a su bebé. Pero no alcanzamos a entender que es lo que falla de su relación con Bob. Le faltan escenas de intimidad ( no quiero decir de cama y destape) a esta relación. Sino interesaba profundizar en esta relación, mejor haber pasado de puntillas sobre su matrimonio. 

La película definitivamente arranca con el proyecto de Los Alamos ( vean la peli si no saben lo que es).  Están muy bien sus rifirrafes con Matt Damon, como el coronel al mando de la base. 

Uno echa de menos que la "peli" no explote la carrera por conseguir la "bomba" contra los nazis. De nuevo, el episodio del "agua pesada" (objeto de una peli de aventuras increíble, "Los héroes de Telemark", 1965, y de una serie escandinava en el 2015, “Operación Telemark" más fiel a los hechos), es ignorado.   

En mi opinión, después del encuentro de Oppenheimer con Truman, la peli debía haber acabado en 10 minutos, con la explicación en voz en off, de que nuestro héroe fue injustamente acusado y luego rehabilitado. 

En cuanto a los cameos de la "peli", a uno no le convence el de Einstein ( le falta contundencia al encuentro). En cambio, me quedaron ganas de ver más de Kenneth Branagh como el científico danés, que en la vida real escapó por los pelos a Suecia de los nazis y de allí a Londres y a Los Alamos (lo que tampoco se ve como lo consiguió en la película) y, sobre todo, de Gary Oldman. El Truman que interpreta, es una sola escena donde "roba" la película, reminiscente de su gran interpretación como Churchill en "Darkest Hour" (2017). Uno se pregunta para cuándo una "peli" o una serie de Gary Oldman como Truman...   

Sin duda, la interpretación de Cillian Murphy como el padre de la bomba es hipnótica, absorbente   y merecedora de un Oscar. Pero, para mí, no es suficiente. Con todo, id a verla, porque es una película muy ambiciosa y sus posibles defectos, bueno, a lo mejor no os parecen tan graves.

En esta ocasión, con todo el cariño, voy a discrepar de tus comentarios.

En mi opinión, el objetivo de la película sería la disección del personaje de Oppenheimer, complejo, poliédrico y contradictorio, en un entorno muy difícil, y no tanto el archiconocido proceso de producción de las bombas, el cual estaría al alcance en cualquier biblioteca.

Sin embargo, existe una bibliografía muy limitada y parcial sobre Oppenheimer, razón por la cual, este director nos ha hecho un gran favor al poner el lenguaje cinematográfico al servicio de este personaje.

Y bien que lo consigue, ya que parece que ningún cabo queda suelto, tanto en el terreno psicológico como en el desbrozo del contexto histórico, mediante una muy lograda expresividad audiovisual.

El personaje del general Groves, interpretado magistralmente por Matt Damon, fue clave, y la historia científica del proceso es absolutamente rigurosa, puedo certificar que incluso al nivel de pequeños detalles. 

En cuanto a Neils Bohr, sirvió de enlace vital entre Heisenberg y Oppenhaimer, lo cual queda perfectamente bien reflejado en la película.

Por otra parte, creo que hace bien el director en emplear sobrados recursos para describir y transmitir a la perfección el entorno de la caza de brujas, absolutamente relevante en esta biografía. 

La película mantiene un buen ritmo, las 3 horas no se hacen largas, como debe ser.

En resumen, en mi opinión, este es cine del bueno, te vas de la sala con la sensación de haber disfrutado, y a la vez saber un poco más de Oppenheimer y de este momento tan apasionante del siglo pasado.

When a movie like this one, three hours long, focusing on such an ambitious subject as the life of scientist  Bob Oppenheimer, who became the father of the atom bomb (yes, like the ones that Americans dropped over Nagasaki e Hiroshima), when such a movie  chooses to insert, right from the beginning, fragmented scenes of a trial this scientist had to undergo at the end of his career ( or rather, an investigation carried out first by an interdepartmental commission and afterwards by the Senate, but in laymen’s terms, a trial), this approach reveals to this reviewer a lack of confidence from the movie director, now the renowned Cristopher Nolan, of the stuff he was handling. 

In my opinion, what really matters about "Oppenheimer" (2023), is the process of building the Bomb. As for the moral debates, psychological problems and sentimental troubles of the main character, Oppenheimer himself, well, one thinks they matter so long that they don´t distract us from the main issue of this movie.  

We are briefly told in the movie how Oppenheimer had flirted with communism and of his relationship with his first girlfriend –portrayed  by Florence Pugh-, who chose  to remain a member of that party (still it doesn´t seem very relevant to me that relationship, except that she initiated him sexually. But again, I think the film follows another path). The bit when he goes to study in Germany prior to Nazism, where he meets a future German scientist, could perhaps have led to the development of their rivalry with each other. But, again, the film doesn´t explore this path. During this trip,  Oppenheimer got to meet a Danish scientist, played  by Kenneth Branagh, that one imagines he must have been behind the “heavy water” project that the Nazis developed in Norway trying to get the atomic bomb. 

Regarding his relationship with his wife, played by Emily Blunt, the movie is as dull as a phone directory. We learn that she had a drinking problem, that she’s not happy caring after her baby. But we don´t get to understand where lies the problem of her relationship with Bob. One thinks that there are not enough moments of privacy between them ( by this I don’t mean more nudity or bed scenes). If the movie was not interested in exploring what went wrong in that marriage, perhaps it would have been better to ignore it.

The movie sort of gets started with the development of Los Alamos project ( see the movie if you don´t know what I’m talking about).  Here, his ups and downs with  Matt Damon, as the colonel in charge of the base, are well told.

One misses here that the plotline doesn’t concentrate on the race to build the bomb against the Nazis. Again, the story about the so called “heavy water” ( the subject of an incredible adventure movie, “The Heroes of Telemark”, 1965, and a Scandinavian TV series in 2015, "Kampen om tungtvannet” -“The Saboteurs”-) is ignored.  

In my opinion, after the meeting of Oppenheimer with Truman, the movie should have ended in 10 minutes, perhaps with the voice-over explanation that our hero was wrongly charged and afterwards cleared.  

As for the cameos in the movie, I think Oppenheimer’s encounter with Einstein lacks any significance. Instead, I would have loved to see more of Kenneth Branagh, as the Danish scientist who in real life fled to Sweden from the Nazis and next to London and to Los Alamos (we are not shown in the movie how he managed to escape) and, above all, to see more of Gary Oldman. The Truman he portrays, in one single scene, does really steal the show and reminds  us of his great performance as Churchill in "Darkest Hour" (2017).  One cannot help wondering when he will star in a movie or  series as Truman... 

There’s no doubt about Cillian Murphy’s performance as the father of the bomb. It’s hypnotic, very absorbing and well deserving of an Award. But, to me, it’s not enough. Anyway, go and see this movie, because it’s a very ambitious movie and, regarding its possible short comings, perhaps you will find them of small importance.

This time, with all my respect, I’m going to disagree with your comment. 

From my point of view, the aim of this film is to reveal to the audience the complexity, polyhedric and contradictory personality of Oppenheimer, surrounded by a very difficult environment,  and not the already well-known process of building the bombs, which is something you can look up at any Library.

Nevertheless, there’s a very limited bibliography and rather partial  on  Oppenheimer. This is why this movie director has done us a great favour by employing cinematographic language to explain us this character. And he manages to achieve his aim, leaving no loose links in his story telling. The movie gives you both a psychological description of the main character, Oppenheimer, as well as a historical description of his times, through a very well-done audiovisual design.

As for the character of General Groves, very well played by Matt Damon, he was a key element in this period and the story telling, from a scientific point of view, of the process to build the bomb is absolutely rigorous, even at the smallest details. 

Regarding the character of Neils Bohr, he was the link between Heisenberg and Oppenheimer which, in the movie, is very well reflected. 

On the other hand, I think the movie director does well to use all his enormous resources to describe and transmit the atmosphere at the time of the Witch-Hunt,  which is absolutely relevant in this biography. 

The movie keeps you interested all along, as it should. Its three hours did not seem long to me.

In short, in my opinion, this is a good movie which leaves you both with the feeling of a having enjoyed a good time & learnt a bit more about Oppenheimer and that exciting period from last century.
