THE MULE (MULA)

This is a film I haven't seen yet. Well, in fact it has not been released yet in Spain.  

Looks as if Clint Eastwood is back at the top of his form, which is not a small feat considering that he’s around ninety years old. 

After three propaganda movies praising American values, Eastwood has gone again into the losers’ world. Those so called “propaganda movies” were “American Sniper”(2014): an intelligent, well finished movie set in the Iraq War,” Sully” (2016), a very well finished movie though completely hollow, and  “The 15:17 to Paris” (2018), which I flatly refused to see after reading its plot outline.

Instead “The Mule” –which Eastwood stars in and directs- seems related to his losers’ films like “Honkytonk Man” (1982), “Bird” (1988) or “‎Million Dollar Baby” (2004), to quote some.

What I have read about “The Mule” is in the attached review, in Spanish, published in the Argentinean daily “Clarín” (see below the link),though I recommend reading it after seeing the movie. 

In “The Mule” Eastwood plays an old man who accepts, in order to make a living because he`s penniless, to work for a drug cartel, smuggling cocaine in his van. As he looks so old, it is supposed that the police won't suspect Gramps as a smuggler. In the film, he has a daughter, played by Alison Eastwood (one of his daughters in real life), whom previously he had directed in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” ( 1997), arguably one of his best films. Of course, in the movie he is estranged from his daughter as otherwise one thinks she wouldn't let him make a living smuggling coke. On the other hand, the policeman or inspector who is after all that coke smuggling and eventually after the character played  by Clint Eastwood  is Bradley Cooper, whom Eastwood had previously directed (and made a star of him) in “American Sniper” (2014).

I have read in some reviews that “The Mule” is criticised because it’s too long, too slow, doesn´t have a straight story line... Whatever its shortcomings, let me tell you in Eastwood`s defence, that if I happen to live to be ninety, I´m pretty sure that everything  I do then, will be subject to criticism and easily improved upon...

Esta es una película que no he visto todavía. De hecho, ni siquiera se ha estrenado en España.

Parece que Clint Eastwood ha vuelto en su mejor  forma, lo que no es poca cosa si se tiene en cuenta que ronda los noventa años.

Después de tres películas propagandísticas, alabando los valores americanos, Eastwood ha vuelto otra vez al mundo de los perdedores. Estas llamadas “películas propagandísticas” fueron “El Francotirador”(2014): una película inteligente y bien acabada, ambientada en la Guerra de Irak,” Sully” (2016), una película muy bien acabada pero completamente hueca, y  “15:17 Tren a Paris” (2018), que me negué a verla  después de leer su argumento.

En cambio, “ Mula” –en la que Eastwood actúa y dirige- parece guardar relación con sus películas de perdedores como “El Aventurero de Medianoche” (1982), “Bird” (1988) o “‎Million Dollar Baby” (2004), por citar algunas.

Lo que he leído sobre “Mula” está en la crítica adjunta, publicada en el diario argentino “Clarín” (debajo está el link), aunque recomiendo leerla después de ver la película.   

En “Mula” Eastwood interpreta a un viejo que acepta , para ganarse la vida porque se ha quedado sin blanca. Trabajar para un cartel de la droga, transportando cocaína en su camioneta. Como parece tan mayor, se supone que la policía no sospechará del abuelo como un traficante. En la película tiene una hija,  interpretada por  Alison Eastwood (una de sus hijas en la vida real), a la que previamente había dirigido en  “Medianoche en el Jardín del Bien y del Mal” (1997), probablemente una de sus mejores películas. Obviamente, en la película, no mantiene contacto con su hija ya que, de otro modo, uno cree que su hija no le dejaría ganarse la vida transportando cocaína. Por otro lado, el policía o inspector que investiga este tráfico de coca y finalmente al personaje que interpreta Clint Eastwood  es Bradley Cooper, a quien Eastwood había previamente  dirigido  (y convertido en una estrella) en “El Francotirador”(2014).

He leído críticas de que “Mula” es demasiado larga, lenta, que carece de una línea argumental clara... A pesar de sus posibles fallos, permítaseme decir en descargo de Eastwood, que si llego a los noventa, estoy convencido que todo lo que haga entonces será fácilmente criticable y mejorable…

Esta es una película que había visto varias veces de adolescente y se convirtió en una de mis favoritas. Años después, de adulto, me quedé con la duda de porqué me había impresionado tanto. SEVEN SAMURAI - AKIRA KUROSAWA 1954

(EN CASTELLANO DEBAJO)  I recently saw "Seven Samurai" (1954) on DVD. I'm ashamed to say that I had never seen it before, even though I had read a lot about that movie and how it had "inspired" Hollywood's "The Magnificent Seven".  Well, in my case, I missed "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) as a child & saw it as an adult. I must say that it made a very poor impression on me. It was a rather childish film, even for a western (where goodness always prevails). Yes, the casting was very promising with a bunch of young actors (Mc Queen, Coburn, Bronson...), who made it big in the film world later in their careers. But, all in all, I think those young actors performed much better in "The Great Escape" (1963), by the same director, John Sturges, which, after all, I think it can be considered an adult film (unlike "The Magnificent Seven").  What had always restrained me from seeing "The Seven Samurai" was its runn

PSYCHO (1960)

This summer I saw the above, Hitchcock's masterpiece, for the first time at the movies, at my beloved Phenomena cinema. By the first time, what I mean is that previously I had just seen it on TV, on Video VHS (not even DVD), dubbed in Spanish, but not on the big screen. Well, it's worth the trouble of seeing it at the movies. At Phenomena, on its huge screen, “Psycho” had a "square" format, neither panoramic nor rectangular.        At the beginning, there's the typewritten mention on the screen of Phoenix, the date and the time of the day. This is something that's been copied in movies and books endlessly and still is, as a way to create tension. But it was Hitch's idea. Even at this small detail he was avant-garde. Much of the merit of this movie, in my opinion, lies in the sound track. The music is twisted, like that of a tormented soul, by Bernard Herrmann, the same guy who made it for "Vertigo". There are clearly three parts in the movie:
